US students praise commitment shown by Indian vets

A group of 11 veterinary students from the United States, currently on an exchange programme, praised the commitment shown by the vets here in treating animals in distress.

CHENNAI : A group of 11 veterinary students from the United States, on an exchange programme, praised the commitment being shown by the vets here in treating animals in distress.

The students, all girls, from the Michigan State University (MSU) in the US are here as part of a month-long Study Abroad programme of the university with the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS).

"We saw a badly injured horse being offered best of treatment by the vets here. But the same horse would have been either allowed to die a natural death or be subject to euthanasia in US, if it were found to be of little use," one of the students, Amanda Audo, told reporters in an interaction here.

"This shows the culture of India as well as the commitment of the professionals here," another student, Kate McCormick said.

The girls, studying Diploma in Veterinary Medicine, said they had particularly come to study about animal diseases in tropical conditions and gained "valuable knowledge" from TANUVAS here.

P Thangaraju, Vice Chancellor of the University, said such programmes would greatly help foreign students as "many private Indian universities were recruiting foreign professionals."

Ten students from TANUVAS would be visiting MSU next month. TANUVAS was in the process of finalising a tripartite agreement with MSU and Uganda University for faculty exchange, he said adding it would "soon" receive an American Veterinary Medical Association accreditation.
