US security system to be installed in New Delhi station
A "non-intrusive" state-of-the- art security system procured from the United States will be put in place at the New Delhi Railway Station.
The system, which cost about Rs 20 crore, will be first installed at the platform no 12 of the railway station within six months as a pilot project, Union Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal has said.
Platform No 12 was selected for the pilot project as it was the busiest and it caters to over four lakh people during peak seasons.
Sibal said the system will be configured to Indian conditions if found successful and it will be extended to other public places like temples and mosques.
Noting that the system will be "non-intrusive", he said access control cannot be enforced in public places because it caters to a large number of people.
Sibal said Railway Minister Lalu Prasad had responded positively to the installation of the system.
The system would have an intelligent central control command which receives inputs from various devices like hand-held detectors and other sophisticates equipment.
The system is designed in such a way that any person carrying suspicious objects would be spotted by the central control system even if human surveillance fails.
