Barack Obama has won Vermont and John McCain has gained Kentucky in the final straight of the race for the White House.
The results for both senators were as expected, with Mr Obama gaining three electoral votes and Mr McCain winning eight.
Sky's Robert Nisbett, in Mr McCain's home state of Arizona, said: "Kentucky was no great surprise for McCain, what the Republicans are really nervous about is what happens in Pennsylvania and Ohio."
Results are pouring in after the longest and most expensive White House campaign that could see a major political realignment in Washington.
After 21 months of stump speeches, debates and political manoeuvres, Mr Obama leads his rival by more than seven points in national polls by RealClearPolitics.com.
The polls showed 228 of the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency were considered to be in safe Democratic hands, according to RealClearPolitics.com.
A further 50 electoral votes are thought to be leaning towards Mr Obama.
For the Republicans, 118 electoral votes are considered safe with another 14 leaning towards Mr McCain, leaving 128 electoral votes from so-called "toss-up" states.
Florida and Ohio are two of the closest-fought states in the nation and together they offer 47 electoral votes to the winner.
North Carolina, Indiana, Nevada and Colorado will also be key to watch.
Mr Obama and Mr McCain campaigned right up to Election Day, as a record number of American citizens from all 50 states cast their ballots.
