US Consulate to host Anti Trafficking Conclave at Siliguri
US Consulate General, Kolkata and noted NGO Shakti Bahini are going to host the ‘Fifth Anti Trafficking In Person Conclave’ at Siliguri.

As estimated, globally human trafficking victimizes 6 to 8 lakh persons from over 130 countries every year generating illegal annual business of 150 Billion USD.
“No one alone can fight against trafficking in person. Nations must come together to form and enforce modern anti trafficking laws. In this serious effort, India is a key partner. This conclave will focus on convergence of our efforts to form collaborative partnership to prevent the exploitation and protect victims,” said U. S. Consul General Craig Hall today at Siliguri.
“Each and every individual case of trafficking is unique and thus demands unique approach for proper rehabilitation of the victim. This conclave will focus on ensuring dignity, self respect, protection and individual care plan for rehabilitation,” said Shakti Vahini President Ravi Kant.
In addition to the Consulate top brasses and representatives of Shakti Vahini, the two days long brain storming sessions will be attended by representatives from many other Government, and non Government agencies from many states or countries including West Bengal, Sikkim, UP, Maharastra, Jharkhand or Nepal.
According to Ravi Kant, Eastern and North Eastern India including West Bengal is the largest recorded victim zone in India. Siliguri plays major role in the scenario. Trafficking from almost entire NE takes place through this place due to its close proximity to many international and interstate borders.
Needless to say, “Siliguri itself is a major victim too. Poor socio-economic condition of many tea gardens in the region, largely dependent on tea economy, makes thousands of poor worker family members easy prey of the international illegal trade. This deserves very close attention,” opined many activists.
