US Congress resolution backs India’s UNSC bid

Appreciating India for being a strong democratic ally, the resolution favoured Delhi’s inclusion as a permanent member of the UNSC.

WASHINGTON: Describing India as a rising global power, a bi-partisan resolution introduced in the US House of Representatives has expressed support for the country’s bid for a permanent seat in the UN Security Council.

The resolution, introduced by Democratic Congressman Alcee Hastings and supported by half-a-dozen other lawmakers on Friday, has been referred to the House committee on foreign affairs.

Appreciating India for being a strong democratic ally, key economic partner and a rising global power, the resolution favoured Delhi’s inclusion as a permanent member of the UNSC.

It encouraged President Obama to work with friends of the US in the UN to effect India’s inclusion in the Council.
