US army general nominated for Afghanistan commander

US President George W Bush nominated US Army General David McKiernan as commander of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan, the Defence Department has said.

WASHINGTON: US President George W Bush nominated US Army General David McKiernan as commander of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan, the Defence Department has said.

McKiernan is currently the commanding general of the US Army in Europe.

NATO leads the 40,000-strong ISAF, including troops from 26 NATO countries, to patrol the country in the grips of a stubborn insurgency of Taliban militants following the US-led invasion of 2001.

Most of the 26,000 US troops in Afghanistan are part of ISAF.
