Uproar in TN Assembly over lawyers-police clash at HC

In the state Assembly, the entire opposition members were evicted out when they wanted a debate over the official statement made on the lawyers-policement clash.

CHENNAI: After the unprecedented violent clash between the lawyers and policemen at the Madras High Court premises on Thursday, an uneasy calm prevailed there on Friday. In the state Assembly, the entire opposition members were evicted out when they wanted a debate over the official statement made on the issue and informing the House about the case being referred for a probe by CBI.

Though the court had declared holiday on Friday, a large number of advocates assembled at the complex to take stock of the situation. They passed resolutions condemning the violence unleashed by police against advocates and damaging cars and vehicles.

The advocates said they will continue to boycott the court till action is taken against the policemen who were involved in the violence. They also demanded action against director general of police and city police commissioner. Lawyers burnt copies of some dailies in the court complex alleging bias against advocates in the media coverage of Thursday's clashes while a group of advocates present at nearby George Town court pelted stones at passing vehicles and shouted slogans demanding action against police personnel

In the Assembly, law minister Dorai Murugan making a statement under rule 110, said the chief minister M Karunanidhi, who is now at a hospital after a surgery, had expressed his concern over the unprecedented clash between the police and advocates. He had requested acting Chief Justice to take strong measures to control the violence so that justice is done and peace restored.

The minister said the government has also decided to refer the case to CBI for an unbiased inquiry. However, members of AIADMK, MDMK, CPI and CPM insisted on having a debate on the issue. The ruling party members said there was no need for it. When the opposition members persisted on their demand, they were evicted from the house by the watch and ward staff.

Before that, PMK members, who have been attending the house wearing black dress, tried to raise the issue. They were also removed from the house.
