Uproar in Parliament on Volker report

Opposition demands a probe against the leak in the report before being tabled in Parliament.

There was an uproar in the Parliament on Tuesday on the question of the Pathak Commission report on Volker being leaked by a media outfit before being tabled in the Parliament. Both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned till afternoon.

The Pathak Commission report on Volker issue has indicted former external affairs minister Natwar Singh and son Jagat Singh and held them guilty of misusing their position.

However, Congress Party has been given a clean chit on the issue. The party has taken a stand and said that it may soon issue a show-cause notice to Natwar Singh.

Even though the report has clearly indicted Natwar Singh and disassociated Congress from it, the discussion in Parliament moved away from the contents of the report to how the report was leaked to the media. It is being said that in a Parliamentary democracy, Parliament is supreme and therefore, it should have been presented to Parliament first.

The Opposition has demanded a probe against the leak in the report prior to being tabled in the Parliament and is proposing a previllege motion against the Prime Minister. It is believed that the report was leaked from the Prime Minister's office, but P Chidambaram, the finance minister denied anything being leaked from PMO.
