UPA's eco policy responsible for farmers' suicide

The Janata Dal-United on Satarday opposed the UPA government's economic policies, claiming they led to farmers' "suicides" and wanted a "comprehensive" agricultural policy to effectively deal with the problems faced by farmers.

NEW DELHI: The Janata Dal-United on Satarday opposed the UPA government's economic policies, claiming they led to farmers' "suicides" and wanted a "comprehensive" agricultural policy to effectively deal with the problems faced by farmers.
Speaking to reporters after the two-day national executive of the party, JD-U chief Sharad Yadav said a "comprehensive agricultural policy is a must in the wake of growing suicides by farmers as also commercialisation of agriculture".
He said the executive had authorised him to constitute a "high-powered committee" to go into the causes of the farmers' suicides and the problems in the agricultural sector.
The committee, in consultation with leading scientists, experts and others, would comprehensively study these problems and its findings would be placed in the next meeting of the party for further discussion and action, he said.
The former Food Minister said that agriculture was not not just farming but "included horticulture, fisheries, handicrafts and an integrated policy is needed."
He said the party was also strongly opposed to "market forces which led to consumerism", thus taking the economy towards "destruction rather than development".
The party was also opposed to corporatisation of land as it would in the long-run lead to scarcity of cultivable land. He suggested that industries be set-up only on those lands which were non-productive or wasteland.
Questioning the "urban centred" developmental model, he said this was leading to an "imbalance" and suggested that it should be made "rural oriented".
