'UPA should take corrective steps'

CPI on Wednesday asked the UPA government to go for a "mid-course correction" of its policies, including economic, for the benefit of the people.

BHUBANESWAR: CPI on Wednesday asked the UPA government to go for a "mid-course correction" of its policies, including economic, for the benefit of the people.

For the UPA government, which completed three years in office, the fourth is a crucial year and unless it amended certain policies it would be difficult to face the people, CPI National Secretary D Raja told newsmen here.

"The UPA government has not taken adequate steps to address the concerns of the farmers in distress... We urge the government to step up investment in the farm sector, ensure easy credit at lower interest rate and ensure remunerative price for agricultural produces," Raja said.

The government objective of achieving four per cent growth in the agricultural sector could not be reached unless the correctional measures were taken to amend its policies, he said and referred to the report of the National Commission for Agriculture in this regard.

The commission, headed by celebrated scientist M S Swaminathan, had in the report recommended for credit at lower interest rate while cautioning about possible food insecurity.

Though the government has been talking of double digit GDP growth and Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram claimed that the inflation was on a downswing, it was not evident on the ground, the senior CPI leader observed.

"In fact, ASSOCHAM has been saying that the prices of essential commodities had gone up by 30 to 35 per cent," Raja said and expressed opposition to forward trading in foodgrains as "it affected other prices".
