Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government will soon launch a portal that will help speed up the compensation process to victims of crimes under the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and the Protection of Civil Rights Act.

UP will be the second state after Rajasthan to launch such a portal. The state registered the highest number of cases of crimes committed against Scheduled Castes in 2019, followed by Rajasthan, while Rajasthan topped the list in rapes against SCs, followed by UP.

A government official from the state’s social welfare department told ET that unlike Hathras and similar cases that get highlighted by the media, in most cases the compensation to victims gets delayed.

In Hathras, the compensation of Rs8,25,000 was disbursed in all of three days by the department, apart from the ex gratia amount of Rs 5 lakh to the kin announced by chief minister Yogi Adityanath, along with a house and a government job to a family member.
