LUCKNOW: There is fresh advertisement for lawlessness in Uttar Pradesh: a mob led by a minister in the Mayawati government murdering a policeman. The minister, Jamuna Nishad, was sacked from the government after the administration decided to book him in the case.

The cop was murdered by the supporters of the minister at the Maharajganj police station, where the minister had to follow up on a rape case. Police officials said that an altercation broke out between the ministers supporters and the policemen at the station. The ministers supporters thrashed policemen and also damaged property of the police station.

The minister had this morning met the chief minister to explain the episode. The chief minister decided to sack Mr Nishad when it became quite clear that protecting the minister could result in a major image deficit for her government.

The chief minister, who announced the sacking of the minister , also ordered a probe into the death of the policeman. Ms Mayawati said he has forwarded the resignation letter to the governor and announced a financial assistance of Rs 24 lakh and a job for the family of the slain constable.

Reports from Maharajganj said angry villagers tried to ransack the police station demanding action against the SHO for shielding an accused in the alleged rape of a girl belonging to the Nishad community . The chief minister told reporters that the girl had lodged an FIR at the police station on June 5 claiming she was raped. After medical inquiry, the case of rape was converted to Section 354 of the IPC, which deals with molestation , leading to unrest among villagers, the chief minister said.

The minister, however, denied being present during the mayhem at the police station and that the shot was fired from his car. He told reporters that his car was parked 300 metres away from the station. The chief minister said her government would have recommended a CBI probe into the incident , but as the agency had earlier refused to accept a number of cases from the state government, she decided against it.
