JAIPUR: Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar today said that UP IAS officer Durga Shakti Nagpal's suspension was an "unfortunate" episode.

"It's an unfortunate incident," Aiyar said during the first annual Shiv Charan Mathur memorial Lecture on 'Decline and Fall of the Civil Services in India -- The Role of the Political Masters'.

Speaking on the occasion, the diplomat-turned-politician said the Civil Services were a mechanism to deliver the benefits of development to the people which needed proper coordination between ministers and bureaucrats to work well.

Former Karnataka governor TN Chaturvedi, too, was present at the event organised by the Shiv Charan Mathur Social Policy Research Institute.
