UP govt ready for CBI probe in Aarushi case: Mayawati
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Thursday held a press conference in connection with the murder of Noida schoolgirl Aarushi Talwar.
The chief minister blamed the Congress government for politicising the Aarushi case.
She also said the UP government was ready for a CBI probe in the case, and added that she had written to the Centre demanding a CBI probe into the murder.
Mayawati alleged the Centre was avoiding a CBI probe in the case. CBI has had a history of turning back cases referred by the UPA government, she added.
The UP chief minister said the police had certain evidence in connection with the case; but propriety did not allow her to divulge it.
Maywati also reiterated her government would only punish the guilty, not the innocent. And any police officer trying to protect anyone, too would be punished, she added.
Earlier, union minister Renuka Chowdhury had attacked Mayawati for alleged mishandling of the case. "The language used by police personnel to describe the murder violates all norms of decency and we have taken a strong view of it. I will take this up with Mayawati. As a woman... I dont think she will allow such a thing," Chowdhury had said.
Aarushis father, Dr Rajesh Talwar, has been arrested for the murder of his daughter. His family has demanded a CBI probe into the murder.
