The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday approved the proposal to take back over 41,000 sq feet land given to senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan's Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Trust in Rampur in 2007 to build a school.

The land was leased to the trust for 30 years in exchange for only ₹100 per year, state minister Suresh Khanna said, adding that while it was given to build a school there, terms of the lease deed were violated and instead a party office was brought up which is why the land was being returned to the government.

The district magistrate of Rampur had formed an enquiry committee to probe the violations and it was after reviewing the investigation report that the decision was taken. The 41,181 square foot land, including the building of Murtaza Higher Secondary School will be taken over by the secondary education department of UP government. In February, the government had cancelled another lease for 3.24 acre land to the trust.
