The demand for a ban on the sale of liquor and meat was raised by seers after CM Yogi Adityanath renamed Faizabad as Ayodhya. While the sale of liquor and meat was already banned in Ayodhya municipal board area, they demanded that the ban should be implemented across the district after it was renamed Ayodhya.
The move comes amid the growing clamour for starting Ram Temple construction in Ayodhya and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad teaming up with seers and saints for a grand show of strength on November 25 to put pressure on the Centre for bringing a law to pave way for the Ram temple.
VHP spokesperson in Ayodhya, Sharad Sharma, said the state government’s plan to ban sale of liquor and meat in Ayodhya was a welcome step. “This has been hurting the sentiments of saints in this religious town,” Sharma said.
