UP gets Rs 28.1 crore fund for acid attacks and rape cases for compensation
NEW DELHI: Uttar Pradesh, which has recorded the highest number of acid attacks and rape cases, has been allocated Rs 28.10 crore, the largest sum, by the Centre for compensating victims of violent crimes.

The amount includes money for accident victims, those who have suffered permanent disability and for physical-abused minors.

According to the 2014 National Crime Records Bureau report, UP, MP, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and West Bengal are least secure states for women. Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and West Bengal were earmarked Rs 21.80 crore, Rs 17.65 crore, Rs 15.45 crore and Rs 12.45 crore, respectively.

Among Union territories, Delhi with the highest recorded number of accidents and rape cases has been allocated Rs 8.8 crore. The Central Victim Compensation Fund was set up last year by the Modi government with an initial corpus of Rs 200 crore from ‘Nirbhaya’ funds.

As per the plan, the fund will support victims of rape, acid attacks, human trafficking and women killed or injured in the cross-border firing.

The victims of acid attacks and rapes will now get Rs 3 lakh, while the compensation will rise by 50 per cent in case the victim is below 14 years.

In a recent communication, the home ministry also said states could seek the entire compensation allocated once, but will be “required to submit periodic reports regarding implementation.”

The scheme will be monitored by the home ministry and administered by an empowered committee consisting of officials from the Ministry of Women and Child Development and Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

A senior home ministry official said, “the aim of the CVCF was to support and supplement the existing victim compensation schemes notified by states/UT administrations through the new scheme.”

The scheme was conceived to reduce disparity in quantum of compensation amount notified by different states/UTs.
