NEW DELHI: The political drama being enacted in Uttar Pradesh was played out in the Lok Sabha during the discussion on the confidence motion when SP members very nearly came to blows with BSP rivals. Sensing that the situation was turning ugly, Speaker Somnath Chatterjee abruptly adjourned the proceedings of the House for 15 minutes.

Trouble erupted when BSP member Ilyas Azmi rose to interrupt SP parliamentary party leader Ram Gopal Yadav, asking him to talk about Uttar Pradesh rather than focusing on other things. This infuriated the other SP members, who sought to surround Mr Azmi.

One of the SP members put his hand on Mr Azmis shoulder, provoking Mr Akbar Ahmed Dumpy, the newly-elected BSP MP from Azamgarh, to rush to the well of the House, charging the Samajwadi Party brigade of unleashing goondagardi on the floor on the House. ``This is not Uttar Pradesh. This cannot go on, the BSP legislator yelled.

Dumpy was joined in the well by his partys House leader Brajesh Pathak. Fearing that that the situation would spin out of control, the Speaker adjourned the proceedings of the House.
