UP CM Akhilesh Yadav today wrote to PM Manmohan Singh requesting appropriate action for inclusion of members of the Kol caste residing in the state in the list of Scheduled Tribes.

LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav today wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh requesting appropriate action for inclusion of members of the Kol caste residing in the state in the list of Scheduled Tribes.

In his letter, Yadav said said the state government had got a survey conducted on Kols by Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Research and Training Institute.

According to the survey report presented by the Institute as per the social, economic, educational and religious conditions of Kols, it would be appropriate that they be included in the list of Scheduled Tribes, he said in the letter.

The letter said that it is clear through the study of the state government that Kols fulfil all the requirements to be included in the list of STs and therefore the government has recommended that this caste be removed from the list of Scheduled Castes and be included in that of Scheduled Tribes.
