The BJP's Uttar Pradesh unit replaced 69 of its 98 district level presidents on Friday, in a major overhaul of the party's ground level organisation with an eye on the 2024 general election.

While there are 75 districts in UP, the party has divided its state organisation into 98 district level units under five regions - western, Braj, Kanpur, Awadh, Gorakhpur and Kashi.

The reshuffle was being expected for the last few months. According to party sources, keeping 2024 polls in mind, those chiefs who had served two terms have been replaced along with those against whom local workers gave a negative feedback regarding their performance.

The district chief of Mau where BJP lost the recent Ghosi assembly bypoll, has been replaced.

Besides, there has been an attempt to draw a balanced list based on caste equations with highest number of OBCs being made presidents commensurate with their population, followed by Brahmins. Four women chiefs also have been selected.

In the western region of UP, 16 of the 19 district chiefs were changed, in Braj 10 of the 19, in Kanpur 13 of the 17, in Awadh 10 of the 16, in Gorakhpur nine of the 12 and in Kashi 11 of the 16 district chiefs were replaced.
