United Opposition can defeat BJP in 2024 Lok Sabha elections: Nitish Kumar

Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar on Sunday said a united opposition can defeat BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Speaking at the JDU plenary session in Patna, Kumar took the opportunity to attack BJP and reaffirmed that he was working to unite the opposition against the party.

His statement has come at a time when the grand alliance in Bihar has lost the Kurhani assembly by-election to BJP. "We have lost the Kurhani seat, and they are discussing it. They have lost in two states but there is no discussion on that," Kumar said.

Talking about the possibility of opposition unity, Kumar said there will be no third front, but it will be the main opposition front. "If all the parties come together and present a united fight, we can defeat BJP in 2024."


JDU president Lalan Singh had said on Saturday that Nitish Kumar is working for the largest opposition unity. Kumar alleged that his party's unsatisfactory performance in the last assembly elections was because of their then alliance partner BJP.

"They (BJP) should be reminded that never had our party won fewer seats, either in the assembly polls of 2005 or in 2010. In 2020, we suffered as they tried to ensure the defeat of our candidates," he said.

Without naming PM Modi, Kumar said he belongs to a state which has been prosperous since the British Raj. "The nation cannot progress without developing the poorer ones," he added, reiterating his demand for special status for Bihar and other poor states.
