NEW DELHI: Union minister for urban housing and poverty alleviation Ajay Maken has resigned from the Union Cabinet. Sources in his office confirmed to ET that the minister had tendered his resignation to devote himself to party work.

Speculation is that he would be goven some responsibility in the party, either as General Secretary in the AIl India Congress Committee (AICC) or as chief of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee.

This move has been done keeping in mind an impensing Cabinet reshuffle to be effected next weekend.

Sources in the government also say that other ministers might follow suit.

In an election year, the focus of the Congress has shifted to organisational matters and vice president Rahul Gandhi's new team.
