NEW DELHI: Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani was admitted to a hospital this week after her return from the US where she had gone to participate in an international conference.

According to sources, she underwent a minor surgery on her leg at Medanta Hopital in Gurgaon and was kept under observation in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for a day. Irani is recovering now.

When contacted by ET, Dr. Naresh Trehan, chairman and managing director of Medanta -The Medcity, said, "As a matter of policy, we do not give out information on patients." While the exact nature of the surgery is not known, sources said that Irani had complained of pain and discomfort in one of her legs after her return from the US.

Irani had left for the Bahamas on June 23 to attend the Commonwealth Education Ministers' meet where she addressed the main plenary session. After her return on Friday, she held a meeting with school education and higher education secretaries to discuss the launch of a scheme called the Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan. Irani hasn't been attending office for the last three days.

She had to skip the central university vice chancellors meeting on Tuesday. The vice chancellors were informed of the reason for her absence during the meeting.
