Union Cabinet approves five new law officers for High Courts

NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet today approved appointment of five new Additional Solicitors General in as many High Courts.

The Cabinet approved a Law Ministry proposal that sought approval to appointment of five ASGs in Punjab and Haryana, Patna, Gujarat, Karnataka and Jharkhand High Courts, official sources said here.

At present, the government is represented by 13 law officers, including the Attorney General and the Solicitor General in the Supreme Court. There is one ASG each in the Delhi High Court, the Bombay High Court, the Calcutta High Court, the Allahabad High court and two in the Madras High Court.

A need was felt to appoint more law officers to tackle the increasing number of litigations.

Besides representing government in courts, the law officers also tender legal advice to it.
