Top Congress leaders on Wednesday told ambassadors and high commissioners of the G20 and neighbouring countries, barring Pakistan, that the Congress has unflinching commitment to fighting terrorism “without politicising it”.

As the meeting took place ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, and in the backdrop of the recent Pulwama terror attack and the subsequent Indo-Pak crossborder exchanges, the Congress leadership told these envoys that the entire nation “stands united” in its fight against terror.

Reassuring the envoys on the Congress’ economic policies, former prime minister Manmohan Singh told the group that the party’s economic policy is fully committed to economic reforms, reviving investment in the country, generating employment and providing social security net to the poor sections as the previous UPA regimes had demonstrated through many social sector schemes.

Apart from Singh, Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, and Anand Sharma led the Congress delegation in their interactions during which they also assured the envoys that Congress is committed to strengthening ties with India’s strategic partners. After the luncheon meeting, Rahul Gandhi tweeted: “Today I met diplomats of the G20 nations & some neighbouring countries.

We discussed a wide range of issues & are united in our fight against the scourge of terrorism. I enjoyed the exchange of perspectives & ideas & look forward to continuing our dialogue.” While Sharma, chairman of the Foreign Affairs Department of AICC, said there was no specific mention of the Indo-Pak tension post-Pulwama, yet the fact was that discussion on terrorism had the incident as its backdrop. The Congress delegation also cited to the envoys the resolve of the previous Congress governments to fight terror.
