Under-pressure Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee urges INDIA Bloc to fight unitedly against Waqf law

Kolkata: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday appealed to INDIA bloc parties to come together to fight against the amended Waqf law.

Calling the Act "anti-federal", Banerjee called for shifting anti-Waqf protests from West Bengal to New Delhi. Pointing out that her party fought against waqf in Parliament, she said: "INDIA Bloc partners should fight together... You have Waqf Act. They (BJP) have snatched away fundamental rights. This law is anti-federal. I appeal to INDIA team - let us be united and let us fight together boldly. This is not an individual matter. It will affect each and everybody. Today, they are competing against one group. Tomorrow, they will target another. They are talking about uniform civil code after this."

Banerjee told Muslim clerics to meet PM Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu. "Go to Delhi and seek appointments with the President and the PM. You should protest in Delhi."


Meanwhile, West Bengal Police has constituted a nine-member special investigation team to investigate the Murshidabad violence.
