Uncle attempts to win back media attention from Raj

Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray now faces a breach of privilege motion in the Lok Sabha even as the Speaker said his latest and “highly provocative” verbal assault on people of Bihar and UP amounted to contempt of the House.

NEW DELHI: Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray now faces a breach of privilege motion in the Lok Sabha even as the Speaker said his latest and highly provocative verbal assault on people of Bihar and UP amounted to contempt of the House.

Mr Thackerays abusive tirade against the people of Bihar and UP, just a day after Parliament denounced the recent attack on the North India by his nephew Rajs MNS, provoked a section of Parliamentarians to move a breach of privilege motion against him on Wednesday.

In an attempt to recapture lost ground from his nephew, Mr Thackeray wrote an article in Sena mouthpiece Saamna, dismissing Biharis as an unwanted lot in all parts of the country.

They are not wanted in Southern India, Assam and also Punjab and Chandigarh. The Biharis have antagonised local population wherever they had settled. The UP-Bihari MPs have shown their ingratitude towards Mumbai and Maharashtra with an anti-Marathi tirade in Parliament, Mr Thackeray said in the editorial.

The Bihari leaders, accusing people of Mumbai of harbouring anti-national sentiments are trying to stir again the fire of anti-north Indian feelings in Maharashtra and should realise that the exercise would only put their brethren here at the receiving end, Mr Thackeray said in a veiled suggestion of a backlash.

Mr Thackerays comments raised heat in the Lok Sabha when Devendra Yadav of RJD demanded action against the Sena chief after which Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee said Mr Thackerays references amounted to contempt of the House. The Speaker asked him to follow the procedure for any action to be taken.

Later, Mr Yadav, who hails from Bihar, gave a notice of breach of privilege against Mr Thackeray, accusing him of lowering the dignity of MPs as also Parliament. Some MPs from UP were also a party to the notice.

With Mr Thackerays remarks having the potential to create fresh problems after his estranged nephew Raj Thackerays recent tirade against north-Indians, chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said in Delhi that he was seeking legal opinion before taking action against the Shiv Sena chief.

If any editorial hurts the sentiments of other people, it can break the law and order situation, Mr Deshmukh said after meeting Congress chief Sonia Gandhi.

Stung by Mr Thackerays salvo, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar sought Prime Minister Manmohan Singhs intervention by convening a meeting of political leaders of Bihar and Maharashtra to sort out differences and put at rest the raging controversy.
