UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations has released $7 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) for any humanitarian assistance that China might need to deal with the situation created by recent major earthquake in Sichuan.

The grant will be used by United Nations agencies, funds and programme to help meet the most urgent humanitarian requirements, a United Nations spokesperson said today.

But it was not clear that Beijing has actually requested any aid from the world body.

"The United Nations stands ready to provide further support, as required, to the Government of China in its efforts to respond to the humanitarian needs caused by the disaster," the spokesperson said.
