UN optimistic about Nepal's peace process

UN is optimistic about Nepal's peace process and the forthcoming constituent assembly poll.

KATHMANDU: A top UN official on Sunday said he is optimistic about Nepal's peace process and the forthcoming constituent assembly poll, but urged the government to improve security situation to allow a free and fair election.

Pascoe met Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala and Maoist chief Prachanda before ending his two-day visit to the Himalayan region.

"I am now more optimistic about Nepal's situation than before I came here, as everybody whom I talked to have shown positive attitude towards the peace process and the November's Constituent Assembly election," said UN Under-secretary general for political affairs B. Lynn Pascoe.

During his meeting with Prime Minister Koirala, the issues relating to latest situation in Nepal including the preparations for the key assembly polls, the ongoing peace process and the UN assistance to Nepal to help the process of election came up for discussion.

"I am here to learn about the peace process and the preparations for the polls," he said.

"We are very much focused in helping the elections. The UN is ready to extend any help it can to make it a grand success," he said, expressing confidence that the peace process will succeed and the election will be held as per schedule.

Pascoe, however, said the security situation must improve and the voters should feel confident and secured in order to hold an election that is free, fair and transparent.
