UN declines to comment on J&K situation

The United Nations on Thursday declined to comment on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir arising out of violence in the wake of demonstrations on the Amarnath issue.

UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations on Thursday declined to comment on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir arising out of violence in the wake of demonstrations on the Amarnath issue.

The issue was raised in the daily briefing for the second straight day by a Pakistani correspondent who wanted to know the reaction in context of what he said human rights organisations asking Indian security forces not to fire on demonstrators.

The United Nations Associate spokesman Farhan Haq said Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon as also office of the High Commissioner of Human Rights is monitoring the situation but "we do not have any further comment on the issue as yet."

"We are studying the issue," he added.
