UNITED NATIONS: UN chief Ban Ki-moon today deplored the Sri Lankan government's decision to end its 2002 truce with Tamil Tigers rebels and pleaded for an end to the bloodshed through a political solution.

"The Secretary -General regrets the decision made by the Government of Sri Lanka to terminate the 2002 Ceasefire Agreement with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE)," his press office said in a statement.

"He is deeply worried that the withdrawal from the Agreement comes amidst intensifying fighting in the North and increasing violence across the country, including Colombo," it added.

Ban stressed "the urgent need to end the bloodshed in Sri Lanka through a political solution" and appealed to the warring sides to ensure the protection of civilians and allow the flow of humanitarian aid to areas affected by the fighting.
