GUWAHATI: Militants fatally shot 12 people in northeastern India's restive Assam state, stepping up violence ahead of Indian Independence Day celebrations, police said Thursday.

The rebels, armed with automatic weapons, dragged four migrant workers and four children from their homes in the village of Aampahar on Wednesday night and sprayed them with bullets, said Anurag Tankha, a police officer.

In an earlier attack Tuesday, suspected insurgents killed four traders in a neighboring village after they refused to pay 500,000 rupees (US$1,190; euro860) each, a police officer said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to reporters.
