ULFA imposes 'taxes' in North East

"If the government can collect tax, then why not ULFA?"

GUWAHATI: The banned ULFA has asked all all people in the North East except "indgenous" inhabitants to pay "taxes" to be fixed by the outfit.
ULFA Commander in Chief Paresh Barua in a telephonic interview published in an Assamese daily here said all "Indians, barring the local inhabitants of the North East except Sikkim," will have to pay the "scheduled taxes fixed by the organisation which has already launched a tax collection operation".
"All Indian businessmen, professionals and government employees who are residing in the North East will have to pay taxes and this will be fixed by ULFA", Barua said.
Barua also urged the local population of the North East to make generous contributions to boost ULFA coffers.
Asked about the government's allegations that ULFA was engaged in extortion, he countered "if the government can collect tax, then why not ULFA?"
Barua alleged political parties like Congress, BJP and AGP also collect funds for their petty interests".
