UK polls: N R Narayana Murthy elated over son-in-law Rishi Sunak's victory

BENGALURU: Exultant over his son-in-law Rishi Sunak's victory in UK general elections, IT czar and Infosys co-founder N R Narayana Murthy today expressed confidence in his ability to perform well as an MP while noting that he has "big shoes" to fill.

"I am very happy that Rishi has won convincingly in Richmond - Yorks with such a majority. He and Akshata worked very hard, beat the pavement and communicated his merit, integrity and his vision for his constituency," Murthy said in a statement.

"He has big shoes to fill since he is succeeding William Hague. I am positive that he will do well as an MP," he said as Sunak romped home as a candidate of Conservative party which was set for a stunning triumph beating projections of knife-edge polls throwing up a hung verdict.

The UK-based 34-year-old Sunak contested from the constituency of Richmond in North Yorkshire which former foreign secretary William Hague had represented earlier before exiting active politics last July.

The constituency was known as an "ultra-safe Conservative seat", as the Conservatives had a field run there in past elections.

Sunak, an Oxford University and Stanford MBA graduate, co-founded a 1-billion pound global investment firm and specialised in investing in small British businesses.

He married his Indian classmate at Stanford Business School, Akshata, on August 29, 2009 in Bengaluru. The couple has two daughters, Krishna and Anoushka.

Sunak's father is General Practitioner under British government's National Health Service scheme and his mother a local chemist.
