UGC plans to introduce Uniform Academic Calendar
The University Grants Commission was planning to introduce an uniform academic calendar for all institutions of higher education in the country, with respect to conduct of examinations and declaration of results.

MADURAI: The University Grants Commission was planning to introduce an uniform academic calendar for all institutions of higher education in the country, with respect to conduct of examinations and declaration of results.
A uniform calendar would help smooth career mobility and academic progression of students, UGC Chairman Sukhadeo Thorat has said in a letter written to Vice Chancellors of universities across the country.
Thorat called for academic reforms, admission policy and examination system reforms, Madurai Kamraj University sources said quoting the letter.
He demanded the discontinuation of informal methods of admitting students for PhDs and introduction of entrance examinations and interviews for admitting students to MPhil and PhD degrees.
"The PhD should be course work-based, rather than thesis-based," Thorat said in the letter.
The UGC has set up a committee to work out an action plan for giving effect to academic reforms in higher education which came up at the national conference of Vice Chancellors.
He said admissions should be based on past academic records or performance in entrance examination conducted by the respective university with due provision for reservation.
The Chairman felt that universities should move to continuous system of assessment and reduce the written examination component to the level possible.
