Uddhav warns of 'Sena punch' over Bajaj plant closure

MUMBAI: Shiv Sena Executive President Uddhav Thackeray today warned of an agitation by his party over Bajaj Auto's decision to shut down its plant at Akurdi near Pune.
Uddhav made the statement at a function held here to mark the golden jubilee anniversary of Central Labour Training Institute here, Bhartiya Kamgar Sena -- the party's labour wing which had organised the meet alongwith Labour Ministry.
The Bajaj Auto management is facing flak over its decision to shut down production at the plant.
According to the statement, Uddhav warned of a `Shiv Sena punch' if the company's Chairman Rahul Bajaj, who became Rajya Sabha member last year with support from the Sena, BJP and NCP, "behaved high-handedly" on this matter.
Decision to close the production facility was taken without consulting workers, Uddhav said. He further said Sena would not allow malls or IT parks to replace factories.
Earlier, NCP chief and Union Minister Sharad Pawar too had criticised the decision and come out in support of over 2,000 workforce at the facility.
Meanwhile, the company has denied the unit was being closed but added it has not yet decided the future course of action for the plant.
"Bajaj has neither internally discussed nor ever externally applied for approval for the use of its land at Akurdi for any purpose other than that of its automotive business," Bajaj Auto MD Rajiv Bajaj said in a statement.
He clarified the plant has not been shut and would not be shut down. "All 1,310 staffers and about 847 workmen are reporting to work six days a week as per their normal routine," he said.
