UAE to develop civilian nuclear power

DUBAI: The UAE is all set to become the first Arab state which will go ahead with plans to develop a civilian nuclear power capability in partnership with responsible nations.
The Cabinet, chaired by Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE, approved a policy statement submitted by Foreign Minister Shaikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan on the UAE's potential development of a peaceful nuclear energy programme.
Under the policy, the UAE plans to set up a Nuclear Energy Implementation Organisation as recommended by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
The UAE, however, has made it clear that its project will not involve uranium enrichment, the most sensitive part of a programme, and that it would instead import nuclear fuel from international sources.
"The UAE will publish the programme's full details, in keeping with its approach of absolute transparency in dealing with the international community," Shaikh Abdullah was quoted by WAM as saying.
The UAE will also be ready to sign a so-called "additional protocol" with the IAEA, allowing for extra scrutiny of its activities.
In January, the UAE signed a nuclear co-operation agreement with France during President Nicolas Sarkozy's tour of the Gulf region.
French oil company "Total" has joined with other firms in submitting a proposal to the Abu Dhabi authorities to develop two reactors, Gulf News said.
