UAE says no extension of amnesty period

The UAE says no to extension of the three-month amnesty period for illegal immigrants in the Gulf country.

DUBAI: There will no extension of the three-month amnesty period for illegal immigrants in the UAE that ends on September two, the government has said.

Officials also warned of an "intensive" campaign to nab immigrants who ignored the amnesty programme from September four.

The number of people who have come forward to take advantage of the amnesty has crossed the 250,000 mark.

UAE's Interior Minister Shaikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan said in a statement to the official Emirates news agency that amnesty period will end on September two and there would be no extension.

But the minister clarified that amnesty seekers, who have completed the formalities before the deadline but are unable to leave the country because of non-availability of air tickets or any other valid reason, can leave the country before November three.

Brigadier Mohammad Salim bin Awaida Al Khaili, Director-General of the Naturalisation and Residency Department in the Interior Ministry, said "an intensive campaign will be launched from September four to nab the illegals who ignored the amnesty programme".
