Two women among six in race for CBI chief's post

Names of six senior IPS officers belonging to the 1979 to 1981 batches are being considered for the top post.

NEW DELHI: With CBI director Anil Sinha slated to retire at the end of this month, the government has begun the process to choose the next chief of the anti-corruption agency.

Government sources said names of six senior IPS officers belonging to the 1979 to 1981 batches were being considered for the top post.

Sources said officers in contention include ITBP director general Krishna Chaudhary (1979 batch Bihar cadre IPS officer), who has earlier served in CBI on different posts, and special director in CBI Rupak Kumar Dutta (1981 batch Karnataka cadre), who is presently looking after important units including bank securities and fraud zone investigation unit, special task force etc. Dutta has supervised probes in important scandals in the last few years including the 2G scam and others.


Others being considered are former CBI additional director and DG of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) Archana Ramasundaram (1980 batch Tamil Nadu cadre) and Maharashtra DGP Satish Mathur (1981 batch Maharashtra cadre), who supervised the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts probe during his previous stint in CBI.

Sources said Delhi Police commissioner Alok Verma (1979 batch AGMUT cadre) is also being considered. Verma has never worked in the CBI but has experience in handling vigilance matters during his stint in Delhi Police.

Another contender is Meera Chanda Borwankar (1981 batch Maharashtra cadre), who is director general of the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD). Borwankar worked as DIG in the anti-corruption and economic offences wing in CBI in the past.
