Both the leaders have made public statements that they have severed ties with the All Party Hurriyat Conference (APHC), a conglomerate of political parties formed in 1993, to fight for the resolution of the Kashmir issue on the political front. A decade later, around 2003, APHC split into two factions, led by Syed Ali Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. Mirwaiz participated in the dialogue process with the then Prime Ministers Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Manmohan Singh for the resolution of the Kashmir issue, while Geelani opposed any engagement or dialogue till "New Delhi accepts the disputed status of J&K".
