GUWAHATI: Two former Congress heavyweights in Manipur who recently resigned from the party and the state assembly joined the BJP.

N Biren Singh and Francis Ngajokpa joined the BJP in the presence of party national general secretary Ram Madhav.

The Congress is facing exodus of leaders in the northeastern state which is going to polls in 2017. "Around 10 Congress leaders are in talk with us and will join us soon," a senior BJP leader told ET.

Meanwhile, boxer and Rajya Sabha MP Mary Kom met Himanta Biswa Sarma, convener of the NDA-floated anti-Congress political grouping, Northeast Democratic Alliance (NEDA). There is speculation that the saffron party may rope in her to campaign during the polls.

“Her ideas on politics seem as sturdy as her punches in boxing ring. It was a delight meeting her and exchanging notes with MC Mary Kom on political situation in Manipur today. The Olympian is humble and has brilliant ideas” Sarma tweeted.
