BEIJING: A series of explosions rocked Kuqa county in the northwestern Chinese province of Xinjiang early today killing at least two people.

The blasts occurred between 3.20 am and 4 am (local time) and the casualties may still rise, state media Xinhua said, adding witnesses saw flashes of fire and heard gun shots soon after the incident.

Local military sources have confirmed the blasts and tight security has been put in place in Xinjiang which had suffered another attack just days before the start of the Beijing Olympics.

Police has cordoned off the area where the explosions occurred, the news agency said, quoting witnesses.

Kuqa, nearly 740 kms from the regional capital Urumqi, has a population of about 4,00,000 and is a popular tourist destination.

Earlier on August 4, two Islamic militants rammed a truck into a group of Chinese border guards and lobbed grenades, killing at least 16 and injuring a same number of security personnel in the tourist city of Kashgar.
