Two deaths and 86 new Covid-19 cases in Tamil Nadu

Chennai leads among districts with 95 cases, followed by Coimbatore with 58 cases of Covid-19. Coimbatore went up the ranks following 29 people testing positive on Sunday.

Chennai: Tamil Nadu reported two Covid-19 deaths and 86 new cases of the novel Coronavirus on Sunday, 85 of which were related to the mid-March Tablighi Jamaat conference in Delhi. State has witnessed five deaths so far.

This takes the total tally in the state to 571. Tamil Nadu has the second highest number of positive cases in the country after Maharashtra.

This was the fifth consecutive day when the state saw a steep rise in the number of cases. It reported 74 cases on Saturday, 102 cases on Friday, 75 cases on Thursday and 110 on Wednesday.

As many as 1,500 people from the state had attended the congregation in Delhi, leading to a scramble to trace, test and isolate them.

A total of 1246 people who attended the Delhi conference have been traced and isolated. Of these, 522 attendees have tested positive.

Health officials on Sunday confirmed that two people who tested positive for Covid-19 died.

The deceased included a 71-year-old man from Ramanathapuram, who died on Thursday. He was admitted to the Stanley Government Hospital on Thursday around 9.45 am but died two hours later. He tested positive for COVID-19 infection.

A 60-year-old man who was a resident of Washermanpet in Chennai was also admitted to the Stanley Government hospital on Wednesday. He tested positive for the infection and died around 1.45 am on Sunday.

The government shared data on Sunday that said 90,541 people were under home quarantine, 127 people were in government quarantine facilities, 1848 people were under hospital isolation.
