Two cargo ships collide in river Hooghly

A cargo ship began to sink after it collided with another cargo vessel coming from the opposite direction in Hooghly river.

KOLKATA: A cargo ship began to sink after it collided with another cargo vessel coming from the opposite direction in Hooghly river in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district today.

The collision between the ships, Green valley and Tiger Singh, occurred at the confluence of the Hooghly and Rupnarayan rivers near Nurpur, South 24 Parganas superintendent of police L N Meena said.

"One of the ships is badly damaged and is sinking," he said.

Asked which ship sustained damage, Meena said, "We cannot say right now."

"So far, there is no report of casualty. The police have rushed to the spot," Meena said.
