Twitter blocks some accounts, 'provocative' tweets under MeitY direction

NEW DELHI: Twitter has blocked some 250 urls (Twitter accounts and tweets), which were using #ModiPlanningFarmerGenocide, after the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) flagged the provocative tweets to the US social media major .

“The law enforcement agencies took notice of these provocative tweets on Saturday , January 30 and this was immediately brought to MeitY's attention which then took action,” a person familiar with the matter told ET.

The person said that since incitement to genocide was a grave threat to public order, MeitY ordered the blocking of these Twitter accounts and tweets under section 60A of the IT Act.


According to government sources, MeitY's actions came after the Ministry of Home Affairs and law enforcement agencies flagged the tweets to prevent any escalation of law and order situation in view of the on-going farmer agitation.
