LAHORE: Two suicide bombers blew themselves up when their car was stopped by policemen on the outskirts of this eastern Pakistani city, injuring at least seven persons.

The attackers were trying to enter Lahore in a white car when they were stopped at a police check post at Babu Sabu outside the city. The two men then detonated their explosives, police officials said.

"Seven persons, including four civilians, were injured in the blast. Two policemen were seriously injured," Lahore police chief Pervaiz Rathore said.

Body parts of the bombers, including a severed head, had been found, he said.

Footage on television showed at least three vehicles were damaged. Personnel from the bomb disposal squad checked the car that was being used by the bombers to ascertain if there were any more explosives in it.

The area was cordoned off and traffic on the busy motorway was stopped.

The incident occurred hours after a suicide bomber blew himself up in a busy commercial area in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, killing 35 people and injuring over 60.

Pakistan has witnessed a wave of deadly bombings and suicide attacks that has killed hundreds of people over the past few weeks. Most of the attacks have targeted the security forces.
