Twin blasts rock Lahore, several killed

At least 19 people were killed and several others wounded in twin blasts at the offices of Pakistan's Federal Investigation Agency and an advertising firm near PPP chairman Asif Ali Zardari's residence.

LAHORE: At least 19 people were killed and several others wounded in twin blasts at the offices of Pakistan's Federal Investigation Agency and an advertising firm near PPP chairman Asif Ali Zardari's residence on Tuesday, a week after a suicide attack on the naval college.

The first blast ripped through the seven-storey office of the FIA, located on Temple Road in the capital of Punjab province, at 9.30 AM killing at least 15 people and injuring scores of others.

Initial reports said the blast was carried out by a suicide attacker but some officials later said the explosion was caused by a massive bomb planted in the building which was badly damaged. Over 100 FIA employees had already reported for work when the explosion occurred.

In the second near-simultaneous blast that occurred at the Model Town residential area, two suicide bombers drove a pick-up truck into the compound of a house that had been rented by an advertising agency and blew themselves up.

Bilawal House, which is owned by PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari, and the residence of Lahore city 'nazim' Amir Mehmood are also located in the vicinity of the house.

The blast killed four persons, including two children, the state media said.

"The suicide attackers drove into the house and blew themselves up before anybody could stop them. We do not know as yet why this house was targeted," police officer Azmat Gondal.

The blast created a seven-foot crater and smashed the windows of all houses within a radius of 100 metres, witnesses said.
