TV needs serious content to counter TRP rush: Ansari
TV must come out with programmes on serious issues, says VP Mohammad Hamid Ansari.
In his address at the first anniversary of the Lok Sabha TV channel, he also posed a string of questions on what he called media revolution and its role in public understanding of issues facing the country.
"... we must ask ourselves if the media revolution has contributed to a greater understanding and analysis of our problems and concerns of the millions of our people who could not partake the fruits of development and economic growth.
"Are our channels driven by TRP ratings and the incessant need to provide sensational news and breaking news stories?" Ansari asked.
He wondered whether commercial considerations have overtaken broadcasting of national interest and public good.
"Is there information and news coverage overload and hence less clarity on issues? While trying to read in between the lines, have we stopped reading the lines?" the vice-president asked.
Ansari also spoke about the need for serious programming on television channels in the face of rush for higher TRP ratings,
"We are often told that TRP ratings and serious programming content do not go together. This is an assumption that must be challenged through creative programming on serious issues," he said as he praised the LSTV as a medium of political education and of parliamentary processes.
