Tushar Mehta's appointment comes after more than 11 months of the post lying vacant
NEW DELHI: Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta was on Wednesday appointed the new Solicitor General of India, months ahead of the general elections in 2019.

He will hold office till June 30, 2020. Mehta, who was Gujarat advocate general when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the chief minister of the state, will replace Ranjit Kumar, who had stepped down sometime back. The post was lying vacant since then.

Mehta has handled several contentious cases, including justice BH Loya’s death and the arrest of the five activists by the Maharashtra police, in the recent past. He was appointed ASG in 2014 after the Modi government came to power.

Tushar Mehta, a senior advocate based in Gujarat, moved to Delhi after the Narendra Modi government named him the Additional Solicitor General.

Tushar Mehta was recently named special prosecutor to handle the 2G spectrum case. In fact, he appears for the central government in some of the most sensitive high-stake political cases.
