NEW DELHI: Major Indian trade unions on Friday cautioned the UPA government "not to fall into the trap of developed countries" on the issue of industrial tariff in the ongoing WTO talks in Geneva.
In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, they said New Delhi should ensure that the principle of less than full reciprocity is adhered to for tariff reduction for developing countries.
Asking Commerce Minister Kamal Nath, who is heading the Indian delegation to the WTO mini-ministerial to protect and uphold the interest of the developing countries by insisting that each developing country apply a tariff reduction on industrial goods in line with its own stage of development.
They said economic sovereignty of developing countries in negotiations should be guaranteed by ensuring that they have the policy space to adopt context specific industrial development strategies.
The trade unions also said India should insist on multi-lateral and national impact assessments of current proposals on development and the quality and quantity of employment. Specific attention should be given to labour- intensive and environmentally sensitive sectors and gender impact, they said.
